Pond Dipping

On Thursday 18th October we took our nets and bowls and dipped in the school pond. We were amazed by how much wildlife we saw!

Orienteering at Wymondham College April 2012

Charlie and Alex were the quickest in Year 5 to find all the check points.

It wasn't as easy at it looked!

I knew we should have gone this way!

We all got back in the end!

Gases all around us

We wanted to find out how much air there was inside the different sponges. By squeezing out the air and replacing it with water we could measure how much it could hold.

Then we tried to find out if air had weight so we put a ballon full of air on one side of the balance and an empty balloon on the other. This proved that air is matter and has weight.

Air is forced into the balloon under pressure, so it will be denser than the surrounding air - more particles will be squeezed in than the particles in the sme volume of air outside the balloon!

Changes of state of water

We did an experiment to find out how quickly the ice cube melted. We wondered if it would melt more quickly if we added salt to the ice cube.

The salt made the ice cube go very cold - but it melted more quickly!
